MG Motor has just revealed that its upcoming compact EV will be known as the ‘Comet’ in India. This is also the first time MG has shown off the India-spec model, which is based on sister brand Wuling’s Air EV and is sold in markets such as Indonesia.

The name, according to MG, is inspired by the iconic 1934 British aeroplane that competed in the England-Australia MacRobertson Air Race, continuing the company’s tradition of airplane-derived names. The Hector and Gloster SUVs from MG are also named after British planes from World War II.

MG Comet : Exterior Design features

MG Comet EV will be unlike any other hatchback we’ve seen in India; at just 2.9m long, the three-door, four-seater Comet will be the smallest four-wheeler on the market. For comparison, the Tata Nano measured 3,099mm in length. Its interior packaging, on the other hand, will be quite space-efficient thanks to its electric skateboard architecture, relatively long 2,010mm wheelbase, and boxy shape.

The India-specific The Comet EV looks exactly like the one sold in Indonesia. The front fascia is two-toned, with a tall and stubby nose and a wraparound strip under the windscreen with LED lighting elements that end in the wing mirrors. The asymmetrical window line with dual-tone piant finish and the small wheels pushed to the edges stand out in profile, while the rear end has been designed to mimic the front fascia.

MG Comet EV Driving range and Powertrain

The Comet EV is expected to be powered by a battery with a capacity of 20-25kWh. The battery will be sourced locally from Tata AutoComp, and according to our sources, it will provide the Comet EV with a driving range of up to 300km and will likely be certified by iCAT, just like MG’s other electric vehicle, the ZS EV. The Comet is expected to be powered by a single front-axle motor producing around 50kW of power (68hp).

What features will you get in MG Comet EV

Compact and small size of new MG Comet suggests that it will be marketed as a low-cost vehicle, but this is not the case. We expect it to be priced in the Rs 10 lakh (ex-showroom) range, positioned as a premium intra-city runabout for which MG will not skimp on features.

Although MG has not yet released interior images, we anticipate the main talking point to be a dual-screen infotainment system comprised of two 10.25-inch screens, similar to the XUV700 or even some Mercedes models. Other premium features expected include connected car technology, dual-tone interiors with high-quality materials, voice commands, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. A sunroof is also possible.

When is MG going to launch the Comet ev ?

When e look into Indian automotive market , Tata Tiago EV and newly launched Citroen eC3 are the direct rival to MG Comet EV. Price range of all these three EVs are around same, but the difference of design features and driving range will rule the game.

According to initial reports, MG Comet EV is expected to launch in India by Mid-2023. With Make in India campaign, MG Comet will be assembled in India.
